History

The news published in Dainik Bhaskar (26 June 2025, page 03) regarding the Geography Department’s journal ‘Geographical Outlook’ is significant because it was the first and remains the only geography journal for the then state of Bihar. It holds the distinction of being the first even today. The first issue was published in January 1956, and the names of contributors were mentioned, though the list was incomplete. It is our duty to remember the scholars, academicians, and officials of that time who played a role in its inception.

In the editorial of that first issue, Dr. Enayat Ahmad clearly stated that the publication would not have been possible without the support of the following individuals. At the top of the list was Acharya Badri Nath Verma, the Education Minister of Bihar at the time, who contributed ₹250 in support. Similarly, Lieutenant Colonel Shyam Nandan Sahay, Vice-Chancellor of Bihar University; G. P. Dubey, Principal of Ranchi College; and Professor L. Dudley Stamp, President of the International Geographical Union—whose message was published in the first issue—were also acknowledged.

Other members of the department who were part of the editorial board included:
M. Pathak, B. N. Jha, P. Pandey, S. M. Shahabuddin, B. C. Sharma, Suresh Pandey, H. K. Chand, Marshall Thiru, and M. Alam (Student Secretary).

We extend our best wishes for the continued publication and success of Geographical Outlook.
